why

In January of 2010 I started my first 365.  Actually, I started a 52 week project, which I failed.  You know how it goes with new year resolutions. Whether it is working out, eating better or practicing a new craft:  I'll do it tomorrow, turns into the next day, and before you know it a whole week goes by.   I quickly realized that for me, it was easier to remember to take a daily photograph than one a week.

My goal for my 365, was to become a better photographer.  And I have.  But that's not the reason that I completed my first 365, or the reason that I began my second 365 in March as a birthday gift to myself.

I take pictures because photography is my passion.  Capturing my life in pictures, forces me to focus on what is important to me.  If I take a whole week of still life, than I know I am disconnected from my family.  If I take a stretch of  "crappy snappies," then I know it's time to slow down and savour life more.  I take pictures to remember the bits and pieces of my life that may have otherwise slipped away.  I take pictures to slow down time - to reflect on in my world, and my life.  I take pictures because I am so filled with joy, or sadness, or stillness, or awe, that I want to hold it in some way.  I take pictures to capture my story.

My photographs capture the moment, and my words are my reflections of that moment.  Usually for me, a picture isn't complete with out the words.  But, once in a while, I will look at one of my images, and the words will escape me.  I can't reflect, only feel.

That's the easy part, why I'm photographing and writing about my life.  The harder question to answer is, why do I feel the need to share our life in such a public manner.  Like who really cares if I make salsa?   I'm not sure I can answer this, but I'll give it a shot.

I blog is because of one of my core beliefs is everyone has a story.  We are all just trying to do our best to get through this thing called life.  All of us, from little babies to grandmothers, have stories that needs to be told, and heard.  I believe that sharing our stories is what connects us.  Pictures From The Patch.365 is where I have chosen to tell my story, to be heard and to connect.
